The title screen of the video game “Celeste” features a stylized icy mountain peak above the game’s name, “Celeste,” written in large, ice-covered letters. Snowflakes are falling against a dark, starry background. The version number “v.1.4.0.0” is displayed in the bottom left corner, and a green “A” button prompt appears in the bottom right. I’d heard things about the game Celeste for quite some time and I must have picked it up at some point during one of the many Steam sales that go on over the year. After looking for something that I could kind of get into and get back out of quickly, I finally decided to spin Celeste up.

This is one of those games that had it come out during my youth, I probably would have eaten it up. It’s a fantastic deep thinker that causes you to have to really challenge yourself in determining what the best, and sometimes only, way is to get across the various obstacles thrown at you. While I only made it through the first chapter and a bit into the second, I can imagine that the mechanics that they come up with along the way would continue to push you further.

Unfortunately, I’m at the age these days where I want to just sit down and enjoy my games, not struggle with them. This is why I don’t get a lot of enjoyment out of souls-like games such as Dark Soul. I want to get in, have fun, get out, not have to meticulously study a level, boss fight, etc… to try and understand just the right twitch button pressing to get past it. It’s a fun game, it’s just not for me.
